People Management

Department & Team Metrics

Composite engineering metrics tell the real story. Technical metrics examined without regard to context are too often misleading. Great stories explain how accurate developers are with workload estimations, how thought out product’s requests are, and track knowledge sharing, so silos are kept to a minimum.

Operations

'Total Work Breakdown' measures types of changes: new work, legacy refactor, churn, and helping others.

Code Reviews

Measuring time to first comment, time to merge, percentage of PRs unreviewed, number of add-on commits, and counts of who is reviewing who.

Fundamentals

Impact measures code changes across six distinct areas while Efficiency examines the productivity of contributions.

Performance Reviews

Evaluating quality and performance when there are many ways to ‘do it right’ is stressful for all involved. Are teammates in the wrong role or only not ready? Companies hire for specific roles, but on the other hand, there is a chronic shortage of talent.

One way to address this dichotomy is to grade engineers against a team-accepted rubric that shares input across roles. In Fixt’s scenario, every six months surveys are sent out to a teammate’s peers who grade the engineer on topics relevant to their team’s mission. Grades are weighted to levels such as Junior, Mid, Senior, Architect. No teammate can excel at everything and so this approach converts skill sets into weighted numbers. Leadership and peers split the weighting.

Culture of Mentorship & Empowerment

The best performing and creative teams are built around mutual respect and understanding. Without this foundation, teammates cannot have a shared consciousness among each other. As a result, inter-team communication breaks down and silos form. However, when teams trust each other and have a shared purpose, empowerment can flourish.

Recruiting

Finding qualified candidates is a challenge for all knowledge-worker departments. At Fixt, we find talent primarily through Stack Overflow’s Talent Platform, and through traditional methods such as headhunters and referrals.

Platform Engineering

Analytics & Tracking

Every action a user or system takes is a part of a bigger story. Intelligently sourcing, splitting, and routing millions of data points give Marketing and Analytics teams the correct raw data at the right time.

Quality Engineering (QE/QA)

Production regressions can expose servers and personally identifiable information to attack. At Fixt, my team takes an active stance on security by focusing on code quality, unit & synthetic testing, in-depth error analysis, and infrastructure as code.

Big Data

Capturing Data

Tracking streaming data requires a rethinking of how data is stored. Backed by core PostgreSQL databases, Fixt uses a variety of managed services to Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) data into SaaS services, data warehouses, and time-series databases.

1 Emitters capture data & funnel to Segment
2 Segment routes to Kinesis & SaaS services
3 Some data is enriched & sent back to Segment

Storing Lots of Data

Source: AWS Lake Formation announcement

Analysts can never know what types of historical data they will need insights into in the coming years. Data Lakes store all data points without regard to structure or cleanliness.

Once in these S3-based formations, Fixt can use AWS’s crawlers to enrich data further or send it to machine learning algorithms.

Safeguards are in place to keep confidential information out of the Data Lake.

AWS + DevOps Infrastructure

Fixt Platform Instances (FPI)

Challenge: How to segment customer data using the latest standards while combining all sources into a single customer service platform?

Answer: Block off all access to data from the public internet and route traffic through multiple firewalls and checkpoint services. ‘Common data’ is stored in a shared database which is then copied into individually encrypted databases.

Service Desk teammates send a unique key through their VPN connection that unlocks all databases through GraphQL. Clients’ connections only provide the identity of their dedicated instance.

Backend services run as serverless containers while lambdas power frontend services.

Security Lockdown

Few things can be as disastrous for a company as a massive data breach. Fixt uses several best-in-class solutions to protect resources and privileged information.
